Local Information

Bracklesham Bay – Fossils are abundant at Bracklesham Bay. The geology of the area dates back to the Eocene period some 45-50 million years ago. The sea was warm and shallow at this time, and marine life was said to be plentiful. Fossils can be found all year round, however winter is clearly the better time when the clay beds are exposed. For most of the year the beds are covered with sand, but a great variety of fossils can still be found on the surface. The bay is located near to Chichester harbour in west Sussex, and many will visit Chichester whilst in the vicinity.
